Located in Thakurbaba Municipality of Bardiya District, Bhurigaun Bazaar is a rapidly developing major commercial and tourist center in western Nepal. Situated on the East-West Highway, which is considered Nepal’s main economic backbone, this market holds a highly strategic position in terms of transportation and trade. Located about 32 kilometers northwest of the district headquarters, Gulariya, Bhurigaun Bazaar has become the main commercial hub for the surrounding rural areas and the primary entry point to Bardiya National Park.
The Naming and History of Bhurigaun
According to former ward chairman Shyam Lal Tharu (a witness), many years ago Bhurigaun had only four or five houses. In one large family among them, many daughters were born. At that time, the traditional custom among the Tharu community was that marriage would take place only when both the boy’s and girl’s sides agreed and the parents gave their consent (“gave their hand”). Therefore, until they married, these daughters grew up together, ate together, lived together, and went everywhere together. When outsiders saw many young women walking together in the village at once, they would curiously ask, “Where are you all going?” The reply would be, “This is the village of bhure-bhur (many fair-complexioned girls who look alike).” Over time, the phrase “the village of bhure-bhur girls” gradually became corrupted, and eventually, based on this social context, the place came to be called “Bhurigaun.”
Around 1982 (2039 B.S.), the then Pradhan Pancha, the late Devi Ram Upadhyaya, envisioned the Bhurigaun area as a marketplace and established Bhurigaun Bazaar. Since then, the market has developed and commercial activity has been advancing rapidly.

Krishna Pranami Temple
This is a major religious and spiritual center of the Bhurigaun area. For followers of the Shri Krishna Pranami sect, this temple is a cherished site of faith, where regular devotional singing, spiritual discourses, and special festivals (such as Krishna Janmashtami) are celebrated with great enthusiasm. Visitors here can experience a peaceful and sacred atmosphere. The Shri Krishna Pranami faith conveys a message of the divine and of love. Devotees who come here attain mental and spiritual peace.
In addition, the Ganesh Temple located in Bhurigaun Bazaar sees a strong turnout of local residents and devotees for regular worship and during festivals.
Main Gateway for Tourism
As Bhurigaun Bazaar is located close to Bardiya National Park and the Thakurdwara area, it sees heavy tourist traffic. For both domestic and international tourists visiting the park, this market has established itself as a major rest stop and commercial center. It has large shops selling daily consumer goods, foodgrains, fashionable clothing, and construction materials. Residents of the surrounding rural settlements rely on this market to sell their agricultural produce and purchase goods. In recent times, real estate transactions have increased sharply in this area, along with the opening of new hotels and resorts. New plans for roads and bridges connecting Karnali and Lumbini provinces are further increasing its economic importance for the future.
Jungle safaris and jungle walks in Bardiya National Park offer opportunities to see the globally rare Bengal tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, and wild elephants. Rich in biodiversity, the park is home to beautiful lowland riverine wetland areas. The riverine areas of the Babai and Karnali rivers, easily accessible from Bhurigaun Chowk, are renowned for river trips as well as for spotting dolphins and gharial crocodiles.
New Construction and Infrastructure Development
In recent years, the face of Bhurigaun Bazaar has changed through cooperation between Thakurbaba Municipality and the private sector. Major new constructions here include:
Administrative and Health Infrastructure
To provide convenient services to local residents, Thakurbaba Municipality’s well-equipped main administrative building has been completed, and the construction of a modern building for Thakurbaba Municipal Hospital, bringing major change to the health sector, has been completed and is now operational.
Road Upgrades and Infrastructure
Blacktopping of the road section connecting Bhurigaun Bazaar to the park via Thakurdwara up to Hattisar, along with blacktopped urban roads, has made the market cleaner and better organized.
Investment in the Tourism Sector
In view of the growing influx of tourists, the private sector is rapidly constructing modern, well-equipped hotels, resorts, and commercial complexes.
Bhurigaun Bazaar is a beautiful confluence of commercial convenience, religious tolerance, Tharu culture, and the natural environment. बर्दियाको उदाउँदो सहर: भुरीगाउँ बजार
भौगोलिक अवस्थिति
बर्दिया जिल्लाको ठाकुरबाबा नगरपालिकामा अवस्थित भुरीगाउँ बजार, पश्चिम नेपालको एक द्रुत गतिमा विकास भइरहेको प्रमुख व्यापारिक तथा पर्यटकीय केन्द्र हो। नेपालको मुख्य आर्थिक मेरुदण्ड मानिने पूर्व-पश्चिम राजमार्गमा अवस्थित भएकाले, यो बजार यातायात र व्यापारका दृष्टिकोणले अत्यन्तै रणनीतिक स्थानमा छ। जिल्ला सदरमुकाम गुलरियाबाट करिब ३२ किलोमिटर उत्तर-पश्चिममा रहेको भुरीगाउँ बजार आसपासका ग्रामीण क्षेत्रहरूका लागि मुख्य व्यापारिक केन्द्र र बर्दियाको र्दिया राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्जको प्रमुख प्रवेशद्वार बनेको छ।
भुरीगाउँको नामकरण र इतिहास
पूर्ववडाध्यक्ष श्याम लाल थारु (प्रतिक) का अनुसार धेरै बर्ष अघि भुरीगाउँमा जम्मा चार-पाँचवटा मात्र घरहरू थिए। ती घरहरूमध्ये एउटा ठुलो परिवारमा धेरैजना छोरीको जन्म भएको थियो ।त्यसबेला, थारू समुदायमा केटा र केटी दुवै पक्ष राजी भई अभिभावकले हात दिएपछि (मन्जुरी दिएपछि) मात्र विवाह गर्ने मौलिक चलन थियो। त्यसैले विवाह नहुन्जेल ती छोरीहरू, सँगै हुर्किए, सँगै खाए, बसे र जहाँ जाँदा पनि एकैसाथ जाने गर्दथे। गाउँमा एकैपटक धेरै युवतीहरू सँगै हिँडेको देखेर बाहिरका मानिसहरूले कौतुहलतापूर्वक “कहाँ जान लागेको?” भनी सोध्दा, “भुरेभुर (धेरै र एकैनासका गोरो वर्ण भएका) केटीहरू भएको गाउँ” भनी जवाफ दिने गर्थे। समयको गतिसँगै त्यही ‘भुरेभुर केटीहरू भएको गाउँ’ अर्थात् भन्ने वाक्यांश अपभ्रंश हुँदै गयो र अन्ततः त्यही सामाजिक परिवेशका आधारमा यस ठाउँको नाम ‘भुरीगाउँ’ रहन गयो।
वि सं २०३९ साल तिर तत्कालिन प्रधानपञ्च स्वर्गीय देवीराम उपाध्यायले भुरी गाउँ क्षेत्रलाई बजारको रुपमा परिकल्पना गरि भुरी गाउँ बजारको स्थापना गरे। त्यसपछि यहाँ बजारको विकाश भइ व्यापारिक गतिविधि तिब्र रुपमा अघि बढी रहेको छ।

भुरीगाउँ क्षेत्रको एक मुख्य धार्मिक र आध्यात्मिक केन्द्र हो। श्रीकृष्ण प्रणामी सम्प्रदायका अनुयायीहरूका लागि यो मन्दिर आस्थाको धरोहर हो, जहाँ नियमित भजनकीर्तन, आध्यात्मिक प्रवचन र विशेष उत्सवहरू (जस्तैः कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी) धुमधामका साथ मनाइन्छ। यहाँ आउने दर्शनार्थीहरूले शान्त र पवित्र वातावरणको अनुभव गर्न पाउँछन्। श्री कृष्ण प्रणामी धर्मले परमात्मा र प्रेमको सन्देश प्रवाह गर्दछ। यहाँ आउने भक्तजनहरूले मानसिक तथा आध्यात्मिक शान्ति प्राप्त गर्दछन्।

पर्यटनको मुख्य प्रवेशद्वार
भुरीगाउँ बजार बर्दिया राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्ज र ठाकुरद्वारा क्षेत्रको नजिकै रहेकाले यहाँ पर्यटकहरूको आवागमन बाक्लो हुन्छ। निकुञ्ज भ्रमण गर्न जाने आन्तरिक तथा बाह्य पर्यटकहरूका लागि यो बजार एक प्रमुख विश्रामस्थल र व्यापारिक केन्द्रका रूपमा स्थापित छ। यहाँ दैनिक उपभोग्य वस्तुहरू, खाद्यान्न, फेन्सी कपडा, र निर्माण सामग्रीका ठूला पसलहरू रहेका छन्। वरपरका ग्रामीण बस्तीका बासिन्दाहरू आफ्ना कृषि उपज बेच्न र सामान खरिद गर्न यही बजारमा निर्भर हुन्छन्। पछिल्लो समय यस क्षेत्रमा तीव्र रूपमा घरजग्गा कारोबार, नयाँ होटल, र रिसोर्टहरू खुल्ने क्रम बढेको छ। कर्णाली र लुम्बिनी प्रदेश जोड्ने सडक तथा पुलका नयाँ योजनाहरूले गर्दा यसको आर्थिक महत्त्व भविष्यमा अझ बढ्दै गएको छ।
बर्दिया राष्ट्रिय निकुञ्जमा गरिने जङ्गल सफारी र जङ्गल वाक मार्फत विश्वमै दुर्लभ पाटेबाघ, एकसिङ्गे गैँडा र जङ्गली हात्तीहरू हेर्न सकिन्छ। जैविक विविधताले भरिपूर्ण, यो सुन्दर तलबेलुवा खोला सिमसार क्षेत्रको रुपमा रहेको छ । भुरीगाउँ चोकबाट सजिलै जान सकिने बबई र कर्णाली नदीको तटीय क्षेत्र, जलयात्राका साथै डल्फिन र घडियाल गोही हेर्नका लागि प्रख्यात छन् ।

हालका वर्षहरूमा ठाकुरबाबा नगरपालिका र निजी क्षेत्रको सहकार्यमा भुरीगाउँ बजारको मुहार फेरिएको छ। यहाँ भएका प्रमुख नयाँ निर्माणहरू:
