Bardiya National Park

08 Aug, 2026

Bardiya National Park is one of Nepal’s most remarkable wildlife destinations and the largest national park in the Terai. Spread across 968 sq. km, the park is known for its dense forests, wide grasslands, rivers, diverse wildlife, and peaceful natural surroundings.

Located in western Nepal, Bardiya offers visitors the opportunity to experience wildlife and local culture away from the more crowded tourist destinations.

A Brief History

The area was first established as the Royal Karnali Wildlife Reserve in 1975/76 (B.S. 2032). In 1977/78 (B.S. 2034), it was renamed the Karnali Wildlife Reserve.

On Magh 20, 2041 B.S., the reserve was officially renamed Royal Bardiya National Park. Following the end of the monarchy, the word “Royal” was removed, and the park has been known as Bardiya National Park since 2006/07 (B.S. 2063).

Nature and Wildlife

Bardiya is particularly well known for its diverse wildlife and relatively undisturbed natural environment.

The park is home to some of Nepal’s most iconic species, including:

  • 🐅 Bengal tigers
  • 🦏 Greater one-horned rhinoceros
  • 🐘 Wild elephants
  • 🦌 Swamp deer
  • Blackbuck
  • Himalayan monal
  • More than 400 species of resident and migratory birds

The landscape changes from dense Sal forests to open grasslands and riverine forests, creating diverse habitats for wildlife.

Things to Experience

🐾 Jungle Safaris

A jungle safari is one of the best ways to explore Bardiya. Visitors can take jeep safaris through the forest and grasslands in search of tigers, rhinos, elephants, deer, birds, and other wildlife.

For a closer connection with nature, guided jungle walks allow visitors to explore the forest on foot while learning about the park’s plants, animals, and ecosystems.

🌿 Babai Valley

The Babai Valley is one of Bardiya’s scenic areas, offering opportunities for camping, trekking, and experiencing the quieter side of the park’s landscape.

Visitors can also spend the night in selected watchtowers and treehouses, creating a unique way to experience the forest environment.

🛶 Rivers and Aquatic Wildlife

The Karnali and Babai rivers are an important part of Bardiya’s landscape.

The Karnali River offers opportunities for rafting and fishing, while the river and surrounding wetlands provide habitats for aquatic wildlife.

One of the most special experiences is the chance to observe the Ganges river dolphin, locally known as Sush, along with crocodiles in their natural habitat.

Experience Tharu Culture

Bardiya is not only about wildlife. The region is also home to the Tharu community, whose culture and traditions are deeply connected to the landscape.

Visitors can experience traditional dances and cultural celebrations, including Sakhiya and Lakhe dances, as well as Maghi, Atwari, Krishna Ashtami, and other festivals.

Local museums and cultural spaces also offer insights into the history, traditional lifestyle, art, and cultural heritage of the Tharu people.

Who Visits Bardiya?

Bardiya attracts visitors from across Nepal, particularly from Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, Nepalgunj, and western and far-western Nepal.

Domestic visitors come for family holidays, educational trips, nature experiences, and jungle safaris.

The park also welcomes international travellers from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Germany, Australia, and other European countries, along with visitors from SAARC nations and Nepal’s neighbouring countries.

Why Visit Bardiya?

Bardiya brings together wildlife, wilderness, rivers, adventure, and culture in one destination.

Whether you are hoping to spot a Bengal tiger, walk through a Sal forest, raft along the Karnali, search for river dolphins, or experience Tharu culture, Bardiya offers an opportunity to explore a quieter and more authentic side of Nepal.

Bardiya is more than a national park—it is an experience of Nepal’s wild landscapes and living culture.Bardiya National Park.
