The Karnali Bridge is located at Lamki Chuha, on the border between Bardiya and Kailali. This bridge, which connects Lumbini Province with the Far-West, is known as a key tourism landmark — the Karnali Chisapani Bridge. After its construction was completed in 1993, this area was connected with the rest of Nepal for the first time. The Karnali Bridge is the first sight that catches everyone’s eye upon arriving at Chisapani. It is Nepal’s first and only single-pillar cable-stayed bridge. This 500-meter-long, artistically designed bridge always draws crowds of tourists who come to take photographs and make TikTok videos while standing at its midpoint. Especially in the evening, when the bridge’s lights come on, its reflection in the Karnali’s waters, combined with the glow of the setting sun, turns all of Chisapani into a vivid, living canvas.

No discussion of tourism in Chisapani is complete without mentioning the native “Asala fish” found here. Found in the cold, crystal-clear waters of the Karnali River, Asala fish is famous nationwide for its unique and exceptional taste. Fried Asala fish, along with gravy or dried preparations, is the top choice of tourists visiting the local hotels and restaurants here. Because of its delicious taste, many domestic tourists travel to Chisapani just to eat this fish.

Chisapani is not just a market — it is also a gateway to biodiversity. As soon as one crosses the bridge, the dense sal forest of Bardiya National Park begins. Moving straight from the bustle of the market into the calm lap of nature, the environment here is remarkably clean and refreshing. As the flat terrain gives way to the geography of the Rajkada hills, one feels the change from heat to a cooler climate. If you’re lucky, you can easily spot wild elephants, spotted deer, and peacocks right along the highway.
