Dhumba Lake

At an altitude of 2,828 meters above sea level, the lake, with its crystal-clear waters, is not just a stunning natural wonder but also holds deep historical and religious significance, drawing pilgrims and travelers alike. Managed and protected by the monks of the nearby Kuchep Terenga Monastery, Dhumba Lake is considered sacred in the Buddhist tradition. It takes only a short 30-minute walk to reach the tranquil shores of the lake, but as you make your way there, you are transported into a world of serenity. The path meanders through lush landscapes, offering panoramic views of the valley below. The stillness of the water, the peaceful atmosphere, and the towering peaks of Mount Nilgiri surrounding the lake create a perfect setting for creating a lifetime memory. It’s even featured in famous Nepali movie ‘Jerry’. Local legend adds to the lake’s mystique. According to the villagers, there was a time when the waters of Dhumba Lake turned a deep, unnatural red. No one could explain the strange phenomenon, and many feared it was an omen. However, after a series of long, devoted religious ceremonies performed by Buddhist monks, the water returned to its natural, crystal- clear state. Since then, the lake has been revered as a sacred site, and its waters are believed to hold spiritual power.

The lake’s fish are never caught or consumed, further emphasizing its sacredness. Locals often visit the lake to pray, hoping for blessings or a positive change in their lives, much like the monks’ prayers that are said to have restored the lake’s water to its original color. On a quiet afternoon, the lake’s shores offer a perfect retreat. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of snow-capped peaks, including the towering Mount Dhaulagiri in the distance. Small ponds dot the landscape, reflecting the mountains and the sky in a breathtaking tableau. It’s a place where time seems to stand still, and the beauty of nature feels intertwined with something deeper, more spiritual.
