Greetings! Welcome to King Birat’s Palace.
Background of King Birat’s Palace
Located in Biratnagar, known as the capital of Koshi Province, the ancient palace area of King Birat is recognized as a historic heritage site. Situated in Bhediyari settlement of Biratnagar Metropolitan City–18, this area is believed to be an integral part of a five-thousand-year-old history. Its foundational stories and connections to the Mahabharata era make King Birat’s Palace even deeper and more mysterious in its archaeological significance.
Relation to the Mahabharata Era
It is believed that during the Mahabharata period, this area, spread over about 8 bighas, 3 kathhas, and 17 dhurs of land, served as the capital of King Birat, also known as the Matsya Kingdom. It is widely believed that the five Pandavas — Yudhishthir, Bhim, Arjun, Nakul, and Sahadev — along with their wife Draupadi, lived here in disguise for one year during their exile. During this time, they changed their identities and secretly stayed in King Birat’s court.
Located about 10 kilometers south of Biratnagar’s main market, this site has yielded various archaeological artifacts during different periods of excavation. These discovered treasures have been preserved by establishing a museum. While conducting excavations around the Bhediyari settlement, many archaeological remains have been unearthed. During these excavations, everyday objects used for farming, hunting, house building, and domestic chores, as well as stone slabs and objects shaped like Shiva lingams, were found. These items have been preserved by local conservationist Kamalkishor Yadav. The artifacts, which tell the stories of the Bhediyari settlement and the entire Biratnagar city, have been safeguarded in Kamalkishor’s museum.
Current Situation
While local residents have continued to protect this site over various periods, when the Department of Archaeology of the Government of Nepal conducted excavations here, forty silver coins known as Panchamark, were discovered here in 1970 AD (B.S. 2027) which were in use during ancient times. This finding confirmed that this area was indeed the royal palace of the Birat kingdom during the Mahabharata period. The establishment and operation of King Birat’s Palace Museum is expected to not only contribute to the preservation, enhancement, and safeguarding of this area but also significantly promote tourism in Koshi Province.
Destroying historical and archaeological heritage means erasing the memory of the people — the loss of stories for future generations to be able to hear and pass down. Therefore, if the temples and palaces buried underground here are excavated and restored, it would serve as a living example and add meaning to the campaign for a prosperous nation. Since the loss of remaining sensitive archaeological treasures from this site would mean losing its fundamental culture, traditions, and identity, proper research and study of this area is very integral with an urgent drive for finding out the stories hidden within the palace grounds.
