According to ancient texts and books, Durga Bhagwati Mata is also described by another name of Shakti and Aparajita. Religious people also call Durga Mata by the names “Sherawali Maa”, “Maa Durga” etc. Durga – who is attained through difficult means in the form of Ashtanga Yoga, Karma and Worship, is called ‘Durga’ of Jagadambika. In Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmya/Chandi Path), Durga Mata is worshipped by 11 different names. Since she killed Mahishasura and restored happiness, peace and prosperity, the story of the mother is considered as the main example of the proof that truth always triumphs. The locals here have a special reverence and devotion towards Goddess Durga.

History and Background of Durga Bhagwati Temple

A long time ago, due to the continuous effects of epidemics and diseases and natural disasters like floods, most of the people of this village had given up. Moreover, the sad thing is that there was no alternative solution for the villagers suffering from all those problems. Some had to lose all their property and land, while others even lost their lives. Some elders and intellectuals of this village came together and suggested that a temple of Durga Devi should be built by worshipping Shakti as a remedy.

On the other hand, while establishing Durga Devi or Durga Temple, there was also a risk that immense power would flow and if the conditions required for worship and worship were not suitable, a greater disaster could occur. For the same reason, there was not a single temple of Durga Mata in the entire district. Coincidentally, this village, blessed with the blessings of Goddess Saraswati, has been successful in establishing the Goddess and arranging all the rituals and the necessary priests, making this place famous as the second largest pilgrimage site in this region after Janakpurdham. Looking at the development and progress so far, one can clearly feel the blessings of Goddess Durga in this village.

The complete evidence of the history of the Durga Bhagwati temple, which was established about 103 years ago, has not been found yet. According to one of the incomplete evidences, it is said that this temple was shifted here from the old Matsari village even before the Goddess was installed at the current location. Therefore, the local belief here is that the exact date when the worship of Goddess Durga started is much earlier. Due to the great flood, the temple along with the village has also been shifted many times and it has been about 103 years since the Goddess was installed at the current location. Therefore, for the locals and devotees, the temple of the Mother is not only important in terms of worship and fulfillment of desires, but is also deeply intertwined with their existence and identity.

Here, gods and goddesses like Shankar, Parvati, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Jaya, Vijaya, Brahma, Brahmami, Mahakal, etc. are worshipped, while there are also temples for Ganesha, Kartikeya, Revanth, Hanuman, Gram Devta, Gram Devi, Dhaneshwari, Vishhara, etc.

Apart from this, there is a Yagya Mandap for worship rituals and Yagya in the temple premises, and a Dharamshala that can be used socially has also been established.

Fairs and important rituals

Mainly, the main pujas in Durga Bhagwati temple are worshipped considering the four main Navratri. Two pujas are held in Asoj and Chaitra, while the remaining two are held in Asar and Magh, which are also called Gupta Navratri. Navratri in Asoj and Chaitra is considered grand. In Chaitra, eighteen Puranas are recited, which is celebrated for nine days like Asoj with worship and havan. In Magh and Asar, there is a concentrated Durga path, in which special pujas are performed on the days of Saraswati and Shivaratri. Apart from that, special Vishhara puja is also performed in this temple. In this temple, Durga is worshipped on the seat of the goddess, and on special occasions, an idol of the goddess is made and immersed after the puja is completed.

Suitable Kumaris are selected by a meeting of the priests of the committee to perform puja throughout Dashain. Kumari puja is performed at intervals of three days from Pratipada to the day of Navami. Kumari food is also served every day of Kumari puja. After each puja, three more Kumaris are added and they are worshipped. Girls above the age of 2 years and below the age of 10 years are worshipped as the form of Bhagwati. After the Kumari Puja is over, the Kumari is immersed and aarti is performed. On the same night, floral tributes are offered to the Goddess and a havan is also performed. It is a tradition for the priests who worship Goddess Durga and the devotees associated with the puja to wear vermilion colored tikas.

Before worshipping the goddess on Dashain or Dussehra, preparations for Dashain Puja are made on the day of Pratipada. All the necessary puja materials for Dashain and the temple priests, pandits and purohits are prepared. The vow or promise made to God to perform the puja and worship of the mother, on time and in accordance with the procedure is called Sankalp. Ganesh Japa, Bhagwati Japa, Rudri Paath are performed by a total of 4 worshippers. On the day of Pratipada itself, the materials required for the worshiper such as dhoti, kurtha, ganji, gamchha, sari, coconut, rice, etc. are also prepared. This puja, which starts from Pratipada, is performed by pandits and purohits on Ghatasthapana, while on Ditya, special worship of Revanta Bhagwan (son of Surya) is performed. Revanta is considered the protector of Bhagwati’s weapons and armor. Although there is no special puja on the third day, the Durga Saraswati Granth of Bhagwati is recited, which is also called Chandi Paath. On the fourth day, Lord Ganesha is worshipped, and on the fifth day, Goddess Bhagwati is also worshipped.

On the sixth day, Bel Nimantra Puja is performed. For the puja, two vines growing on the same branch are required. Such a vine is wrapped with a yellow cloth with a mantra. Its aarti is performed and the next day, Bel Brikshya is worshipped and it is cut and brought to the temple. Then, Nava Durga is installed. Nine pots are filled with water and nine different materials are kept. Vine branches, banana plants, rice plants, Aparajita flowers, Ashoka branches, ….. and Jamara are made, making a total of nine materials.

Then Dwar Puja is performed. In which there are five aartis. Aarti is performed with ghee, water, five pallavs, cloth and five ……. After that, all the materials in the pots are kept in one place and Bhagwati is adorned with ornaments. The work of giving form to the idol of Bhagwati is done. By giving the shape of kajal to the leaves of the vine, it is used to make the apple of Bhagwati’s eye. After the eyes of the mother are formed, three sacrifices are performed, in which a goat, a goat and a human are sacrificed. In this sacrifice, meat, curd, sugar, fruits, etc. are placed in the form of sacrifice and worshipped. On the same day, this sacrifice is also performed during the worship of Phulpati, Dwar Puja and Nisha Puja. All the gods and goddesses, including Bhagwati, and their vehicles and Mahishasura are also worshipped.

Gaja Puja is performed. 32 chakras and one Gaja are worshipped. A chakra called Khodas Dal is worshipped. At that time, two pujas are performed in one chakra. An elephant-shaped idol is also worshipped. This worship is performed by invoking 32 gods in the chakra. Nisha Puja is performed on the night of Mahaashtami and Chausaththi Yogini is also worshipped. On Navami, four goats are sacrificed from the temple here specifically. After that, sacrifices brought by other people are offered. After the worship of Bhagwati on Navami, Masan Puja is performed. This puja is the last sacrifice offered to Goddess Bhagwati and is followed by the offering of some sweets to the Goddess. This puja is performed secretly in a place away from other people.

On the ninth day of Dashain, after the main Durga Puja, immersion takes place on the Dashami day. After the puja is completed, it is customary to accept Aparajita as the prasad of Goddess Bhagwati. Another name for Goddess Durga, ‘Aparajita’, means never defeated, so the devotees who come here take this yellow cloth as the prasad of Goddess Bhagwati and seek her blessings. Another interesting aspect is that it is believed that by wearing Aparajita, which is worn after the puja of Goddess Bhagwati, one is protected from any kind of premature death, sudden crisis and other diseases.

Donations and Puja

It is believed that the wishes of the devotees who come here with a pure heart will be fulfilled. Although many people make offerings in the name of the mother to please her, they generally offer offerings for vows and promises, feed the poor, give clothes, and donate for the development of the temple and feed the kumari to please the mother. Mainly, such auspicious deeds and donations are also done while performing large yagnas, ordinary pujas, sankatmochan pujas, pujas to end disasters, etc. The practice of giving such auspicious deeds and donations is also prevalent here.

Finally

Over time, temples of various deities were established around Matsari village and Durga Bhagwati rural municipality area. In this way, since this entire area is surrounded by temples of deities, it is believed that it is safe from any sudden or major obstacles. Just as according to our culture and religion, God is called the one who saves from sorrow and the one who protects, in the same way, after the establishment of Durga Bhagwati, many such obstacles were destroyed in this village.
