At first glance, Shiromani Lekhnath Museum seems like a perfect blend of ancient and natural experience. On the wall next to the pavement starting from the gate of the museum, you can see engravings of his poems and literary works. Continuing along the pavement, you will reach an old thatched house where Poudyal was born in the mid-1880s. The porch of the house has a syaakhu, dhikki and a millstone, along with the tools used by the farmers to grind corn. At the edge of the courtyard is a small structure with a holy basil plant.

Just below the renovated thatched house is a new stone and wooden house with a zinc roof. It has been developed as a museum in the memory of the poet. This is how you reach Shiromani Lekhnath’s house. The entire area is surrounded by a fence to protect the gardens and other monuments that recount the poet’s life and times. The poet’s verses engraved on pillars near the gardens and the nearby pond and courtyard reflect the poet’s verses.

History of Shiromani Lekhnath Museum

As per the objectives of the Lekhnath Sahitya Pratishthan established in 2055 Bikram Sambat, to develop the birthplace of Kavi Shiromani as a literary pilgrimage site, significant support was received during the establishment period from various organizations, the then Lekhnath Municipality and literature-loving dignitaries. The Kavishiromani Birthplace Development Committee has been reorganized under the chairmanship of Bishwo Prakash Lamichhane with the mayor of the metropolis, Man Bahadur G.C., as the chief patron and the ward chairman of the ward where Kavi Shiromani was born, Purna Kumar Gurung, as the patron. In this context, programs such as the maintenance of the house where Kavi Shiromani Lekhnath Paudyal was born, the publication and release of works by various writers, honoring dozens of hidden creators, a rhymed poetry recitation competition, celebrating Lekhnath Jayanti every year, setting up a literary stall at the Lekhnath Festival, and establishing a Lekhnath Library in Archale have been held.

The foundation, which publishes, releases, and republishes Kavi Shiromani’s works, has honored hidden writers since its establishment, and at the request of the foundation, some of Kavi Shiromani’s works have been published by Kuntidevi Bhattarai. The family of Kavi Shiromani’s youngest daughter Kuntidevi Bhattarai has established an endowment fund for the Lekhnath Literary Award, Kuntidevi Education Award, and Kuntidevi Scholarship, and the awards and scholarship distribution work are being completed annually.

Natyasamrat Balkrishna Sam and Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota considered Kavi Shiromani Lekhnath Paudyal as their guru. The study of philosophical texts and the enjoyment of the poems of Sukavi were his hobbies. He used to compose poetry in a state of deep concentration, as if immersed in samadhi. In an interview, he says that until I see the beautiful picture of the subject to be described reflected in my mind in a good and attractive way, I fill every part of that beautiful picture with the color of propriety and beauty with the brush of my concentrated meditation, and now, when I am sure that it is well prepared, I present it to you through the pen. Remember that at that time I am usually in the inner world and not in the outer world. How? The answer to is: concentrated internal meditation. The seriousness of it can be experienced only by that artist who has spent his life immersed in it.

About Shiromani Lekhnath Poudel

Poet Shiromani Lekhnath Poudel was born on the day of Putrada Ekadashi in the year 1941, in the beautiful village of Agha Archle in Pokhara, under the Gandaki zone of our beloved country Nepal, the highest peak touched by the first rays of the sun. His birthplace is radiant with the divine beauty of nature. After climbing a little north from the flat terrain of Pokhara, endowed with the mysterious beauty of the bright Shukla Gandaki and adorned with bottomless lakes, his village appears in the lap of the mountainous region. From where, in the north-west sky, Machhapuchhre is seen standing in its perfect form, smiling on the charming face of the Himalayas, like a living painting made by the skillful brush of the world’s first magician. The sky-high mountain range stretching from the north to the east is beautiful. Just to the south, the divine Deepang Lake, reflecting the rest of the entire amber, is seen swaying. The charming appearance of the entire Pokhara city is viewed from here. With the essence of this wonderful beauty, a child carrying the seed of a great poet-personality is born in a small house in this beautiful village.

Kavi Shiromani Lekhnath left his birthplace Arghau Archale at the age of fifteen and came to Kathmandu. His entire life was spent here. From 1966 to 1990, he completed his career as a teacher in the court of the then Rana ruler Bhim Samsher for about twenty-five years. While the first half of his life was spent in court service, his lifestyle became very orderly and regular after 90 years. His house was decorated with a beautiful garden in Thamel, Kathmandu. He would wake up before three in the morning. After taking a bath and performing worship, he would engage in yoga till six in the morning. He was more interested in yoga than in worship. After that, he would engage in poetry. Pure sattvic food and respect for yogis and saints and hospitality became his lifestyle. He was very fond of the king of fruits, and he would satisfy his guests and eat them. He was very interested in the politics of the time and the latest news of the world. He used to listen to the radio regularly and stay aware of social activities. He had a deep attraction to world literature, especially Sanskrit and Hindi literature.

In 1951, King Tribhuvan bestowed the title of Kavi Shiromani on Lekhnath. In 1959, Kavi Shiromani got married to a girl named Madhura Devi, born in an Adhikari Brahmin family in Begnas village, Kaski district, at the age of eighteen. Before even two years of family life had passed, the misfortune of losing his wife in 1961. After his wife Mathura Devi died without any children, Kavi Shiromani became very distraught. Due to the pain of losing his wife, Kavi Shiromani left home and started living his life sometimes in Saptari and sometimes in Assam, India. His dispassion was growing. After Manasuwa, who had decided to retire, reached Swargdwari Mahaprabhu and advised and inspired him to establish another household, saying that he had many good works to do while staying at home, and that he had the opportunity to have children, he returned home. After about eleven years after the separation from his wife, in 1972 BS, he married for the second time at the age of 31 to Satyawati, a Brahmin girl from Tarakai village, Kaski district, with the surname Sapkota.

The then Prime Minister, Matrika Prasad Koirala, and all the ministers, employees, writers, and social workers pulled the chariot in which Kavishiromani rode. This felicitation, including a chariot procession, was the first such honor given to a seeker of Nepali literature, which can be called neither past nor future. Kavishiromani was nominated as a member of the Nepal Pragya Pratishthan, the then Royal Nepal Academy, in 2014 BS, and a postal stamp depicting him was also published in 2019 BS. He was posthumously awarded the Tribhuvan Pragya Award in 2026 BS.

In 2022 BS, when he went to Banaras, he fell ill and returned to Devghat saying, “I will not go abroad when I die. I will die in my own country, I will die on the soil of Nepal.” In the same year, on Falgun 7, 2022 BS, he immersed his body in the holy confluence of Narayani and Gandaki rivers in Devghat. This verse, which he kept humming during his last days, reflects his philosophy of life.

It is God who suffers, this body is his home.
When it breaks down, he certainly feels sorrow and secretly takes away his belongings.

Although the five-dimensional body is no longer in this world, his works remain immortal among us today through his immortal works.

Sayings of Kavi Shiromani:

A tireless seeker of Kavi Shiromani literature, he devoted himself to the service of Nepali literature throughout his life. Towards the end of his life, he said about his work, poetry and literary work:

I have not considered any of my works to be the best. I continue to experience some shortcomings in any work. Perhaps in this life, it will not be possible to produce such a work in which my inner self can see the glimmer of excellence… The chronic disease of serving the mother tongue has not left me yet. What will happen now? May God know who sent me to public service and sent me before you.

In the barbaric and cruel environment of the then reality, Lekhnath, who was also the priest of Shri 3 Bhim Shamsher, did not have the opportunity to publish even the countless poems that were written before the writer without the permission of the Rana ruler. Failure to take precautions could have resulted in a disaster. Even in the circumstances, the lines of poetry created by Lekhnath, challenging the Rana regime and advocating feudal culture, are still being soaked in the tongues of the people.

I eat, I bring, I enjoy, I enjoy, I live, I dance, let all the others die, the weak.

नमस्ते ! हजुरलाई शिरोमणि लेखनाथ संग्राहलयमा स्वागत छ।   

 

गेटबाट परिसरमा छिर्दा र घर सम्म पुग्दा देखिने दृश्य 

 

पहिलो पटकको झलकमा नै शिरोमणि लेखनाथ संग्राहलय एक अचूक प्राचीन र प्राकृतिक अनुभवको मिश्रण जस्तो भान हुन्छ। संग्राहलयको गेटबाट सुरु हुने पेभमेन्टको छेउको भित्तामा, तपाईंले उहाँको कविता र साहित्यिक रचनाहरूको उत्कीर्णन देख्न सक्नुहुन्छ। पेभमेन्टकै बाटोलाई निरन्तरता दिँदा, सन् १८८० को दशकको मध्यतिर पौड्यालको जन्म भएको एउटा पुरानो छाना भएको घरसम्म पुर्याउँछ। घरको दलानमा स्याखु, ढिकी र जाँतो छन् र साथसाथै किसानहरूले मकै पिस्न प्रयोग गर्ने औजारहरू पनि छन्। आँगनको किनारामा पवित्र तुलसीको बोट भएको एउटा सानो संरचना छ।

 

जीर्णोद्धार गरिएको छाना भएको घरको ठीक तल जस्ताको छाना भएको नयाँ ढुङ्गा र काठको घर छ । यसलाई कविको सम्झनामा संग्राहलयको रूपमा विकास गरिएको छ। यसरी हजुर शिरोमणि लेखनाथको घर पुग्नुहुन्छ। यस सम्पूर्ण क्षेत्रलाई बगैंचा र अन्य स्मारकहरूको रक्षा गर्न तारले घेरिएको छ जुन कविको जीवन र समयको पुनरावृत्ति गर्दछ। बगैंचाहरू नजिकै खम्बाहरूमा कोरिएका कविका श्लोकहरू अनि नजिकैको पोखरी र चौतारीले कविका श्लोकहरूको बिम्ब झल्काउँछन् ।

 

शिरोमणि लेखनाथ संग्राहलयको इतिहास 

 

विक्रम सम्वत् २०५५ मा स्थापित लेखनाथ साहित्य प्रतिष्ठानको उद्देश्य अनुसार कविशिरोमणिको जन्मस्थललाई साहित्यिक तीर्थस्थलको रुपमा विकास गर्नका लागि स्थापना कालमा विभिन्न संघ संस्था एवम् तत्कालिन लेखनाथ नगरपालिका र साहित्यप्रेमी महानुभावहरुबाट उल्लेखनीय सहयोग प्राप्त भयो। महानगरकै प्रमुख मान बहादुर जि.सी. प्रमुख संरक्षक तथा कवि शिरोमणिको जन्मस्थल रहेको वडाका वडाध्यक्ष पूर्णकुमार गुरुङ संरक्षक रहने गरी विश्वप्रकाश लामिछानेको अध्यक्षतामा कविशिरोमणि जन्मस्थल विकास समितिको पुनर्गठन गरिएको छ । यहि क्रममा कविशिरोमणि लेखनाथ पौड्याल जन्मेको घरको सम्भार, विभिन्न साहित्यकारहरूका कृतिहरूको प्रकाशन तथा विमोचन दर्जनौ लुकेका स्रष्टाहरूलाई सम्मान, छन्दोबद्ध कविता वाचन प्रतियोगिता, हरेक वर्ष लेखनाथ जयन्ती मनाउने, लेखनाथ महोत्सवमा साहित्यिक स्टल राख्ने, अर्चलेमा लेखनाथ पुस्तकालयको स्थापना गर्ने जस्ता कार्यक्रमहरू हुँदै आएको छ।

 

कृति प्रकाशन गर्ने, विमोचन गर्ने, कविशिरोमणिका रचनाहरू पुनः प्रकाशन गर्ने प्रतिष्ठानद्वारा स्थापना कालदेखि नै लुकेका सस्टाहरूलाई सम्मान गर्ने, र प्रतिष्ठानकै अनुरोधमा कविशिरोमणिका केही कृतिहरू कुन्तीदेवी भट्टराईद्वारा प्रकाशन गर्ने कार्य सम्पन्न भएका छन्। कविशिरोमणिकी कान्छी छोरी कुन्तीदेवी भट्टराईको परिवारबाट लेखनाथ साहित्य पुरस्कार, कुन्तीदेवी शिक्षा पुरस्कार र कुन्तीदेवी छात्रवृत्तिका लागि अक्षयकोष स्थापना भई पुरस्कारहरू र छात्रवृत्ति वितरण कार्य वार्षिक रूप सम्पन्न भइरहेका छन्। 

 

नाट्यसम्राट् बालकृष्ण सम एवं महाकवि लक्ष्मीप्रसाद देवकोटा कविशिरोमणि लेखनाथ पौड्याललाई गुरु मान्नुहुन्थ्यो । दार्शनिक ग्रन्थहरूको अध्ययन र सुकविका कविताहरूको रसास्वादन उहाँका अभिरुचिका विषय थिए। समाधिमा डुबेजस्तो तन्मयावस्थामा उहाँ काव्य सम्पन्न गर्नुहुन्थ्यो। एउटा अन्तवार्ताको क्रममा उहाँ भन्नुहुन्छ जहाँसम्म म मेरो विचारपटमा वर्णनीय विषयको सौन्दर्य- चित्र राम्रो आकर्षक भावमा झल्केको देख्दिन, त्यहाँसम्म त्यो सौन्दर्य-चित्रका प्रत्येक अङ्गमा आफ्नो एकाग्रतापूर्ण मननको कुचीले औचित्य र सौष्ठवको रङ्ग भर्दै जान्छु र अब त यो राम्रो तयार भयो भन्ने निश्चय भयेपछि कलमद्वारा तपाईंको सेवामा उपस्थित गर्छु । सम्झनुहोस् कि त्यसवेला म प्राय अन्तर्जगत्‌मा हुन्छु न कि बाह्य जगत्‌मा। कसरी? को जवाफ हो : एकाग्रतापूर्ण आन्तरिक मनन । त्यसको गम्भीरताको अनुभव त्यही कलाकारलाई होला जसले आफ्नो जीवन त्यसैमा डुबायेर व्यतीत गरेको होला।

 

युगवाणीका दुई हरफहरु (लेखनाथ पौड्याल) : 

 

गर्नैपर्दछ अब तिमी सबले नव राष्ट्रको निर्माण यसमा तिलभर नहट पछाडी, चाहे जाओस् प्राण । 

वीर देशका वीर तिमी छौ वीरव्रतका अभिमानी नकुकोस् तिम्रो वीरपताका, भन्दछ यो युगवाणी ।

 

शिरोमणि लेखनाथ पौडेल बारे

 

कविशिरोमणि लेखनाथ पौड्याल घामको पहिलो झुल्काले स्पर्श गर्ने उच्चतम शिखर सगरमाथाको घर हाम्रो प्यारो राष्ट्र नेपालको गण्डकी अञ्चल अन्तर्गत पोखराको अघौं अर्चले नाउँको रमणीय गाउँमा संवत् १९४१ साल पौष शुक्ल पुत्रदा एकादशीका दिन जन्मनुभयो । उहाँको जन्मस्थल प्रकृतिका दिव्य सुषमाले समुज्ज्वल देखिन्छ । सलिला शुक्ला गण्डकीको रहस्यमय सौन्दर्यले सम्पन्न, अतल तालतलैयाले सुसज्जित पोखराको समतल भूभागबाट अलिकति उत्तरतिर उकालो चढेपछि पर्वतीय प्रदेशको काखमा उहाँको गाउँ देखा पर्दछ। जहांबाट उत्तर-पश्चिम दिशाको आकाशमाथि विश्वकै प्रथम जादूगरका कुशल कुचीले भखरै बनाएको जीवन्त पेन्टिङ्जस्तो हिमालको मोहनीदार मुहारमा मुस्कान भरेर माछापुच्छ्रे आफ्नो परिपूर्ण रूपाकृतिमा खडा रहेको देखिन्छ । उत्तरदेखि पूर्व दिग्भागसम्म लम्बायमान गगनचुम्बी पर्वतशृङ्खला शोभायमान छ। ठीक दक्षिण दिशातिर समस्त अम्वरको अवकाशलाई प्रतिविम्बित गरिरहेको दिव्य दीपाङ ताल टल्बलाइरहेको देखिन्छ । समस्त पोखरा नगरीको मनमोहक स्वरूप यहींबाट विहगावलोकन गरिन्छ। यही अद्भुत सौन्दर्यसम्पदाको सार-संस्कार लिएर, यसै रमणीय गाउँको कुनै ससानो घरमा विराट कवि-व्यक्तित्वको बीज बोकेको एउटा बालक जन्मन्छ ।

 

कविशिरोमणि लेखनाथ पन्ध्र वर्षको उमेरमा आफ्नो जन्मस्थल अर्घौ अर्चलेलाई छोडेर काठमाडौं आउनुभयो। उहाँको समग्र जीवन प्राय यतै व्यतीत भयो । विं सं. १९६६ देखि १९९० सालसम्म लगभग पच्चीस वर्ष उहाँले तत्कालीन राणा शासक भीम सम्शेरको दरबारमा अध्यापक बनेर जीवनवृत्ति सम्पन्न गर्नुभयो । उहाँको जीवनको पूर्वार्ध दरबारिया सेवामा व्यतीत गर्दा अस्तव्यस्त नै रहयो भने ९० सालपछि उहाँको जीवनचर्या अत्यन्त सुव्यवस्थित एवम् नियमित बन्दै गयो। काठमाडौंको ठमेलमा रमणीय उद्यानले सजिएको उहाँको घर थियो उहा विहानै तीन बजे भन्दा पहिले उठिसक्नुहुन्थ्यो । स्नान सन्ध्यादि उपासना सम्पन्न गरेर उहाँ बिहानी छ बजेसम्म योगक्रियामा लाग्नुहुन्थ्यो । उहांलाई पूजा पाठमा भन्दा पनि योगसाधनामा बढी रुचि रहने गर्दथ्यो । त्यसपछि काव्यसाधनामा लाग्नुहुन्थ्यो । शुद्ध सात्विक भोजनको एवं योगी, साधुजनप्रति सम्मान तथा अतिथिसत्कार उहाँको जीवनशैली बनेका थिए। उहाँलाई फलको राजा आप औधि मन पर्थ्यो, अतिथिहरूलाई तृप्त तुल्याएर सो पनि आफ् ग्रहण गर्नुहुन्थ्यो । उहाँलाई तत्कालीन राजनीति र विश्वको ताजा खवरप्रति निकै चासो रहने गर्दथ्यो । नियमित रेडियो सुन्ने र सामाजिक गतिविधिप्रति सचेत रहने उहांको अभ्यास थियो। विश्वसाहित्य र विशेषतः संस्कृत एवं हिन्दी साहित्यप्रति उहाँमा अगाध आकर्षण थियो ।

 

सन् १९५१ सालमा राजा त्रिभुवनले लेखनाथलाई कवि शिरोमणिको उपाधिबाट बिभुसित गर्नुभएको थियो। वि.सं. १९५९ सालमा कास्की जिल्लाको बेगनास गाउंकी, अधिकारी ब्राह्मण परिवारमा जन्मिएकी मधुरादेवी नामकी कन्यासँग अठार वर्षका उमेरमा कविशिरोमणिको शुभ-विवाह सम्पन्न भयो। पारिवारिक जीवनको दुई वर्ष पनि बित्न नपाउंदै वि.सं. १९६१ सालमा पत्नी वियोगको दुर्नियति उहालाई  छोप्यो। कुनै जायजन्म नहुँदै धर्मपत्नी मथुरादेवीको ना भएपछि कविशिरोमणि निकै विचलित हुन पुग्नुभयोपत्नीवियोगको पीडाल घर छाडेर कहिले सप्तरी त कहिले भारतको आसाम पुगेर जीवन व्यतीत गर्न थाल्नुभएका कविशिरोमणिमा वैराग्य बढ्दै गएको थियो । सन्यास प्रणा गर्ने मनसुवाले स्वर्गद्वारी महाप्रभुकहाँ पुग्नुभएका कविशिरोमणिलाई तिमीले गृहस्थाश्रममै रहेर धेरै राम्रा काम गर्न बाँकी छ, तिमीलाई सन्तान प्राप्त गर्ने पनि योग छ, भन्दै महाप्रभुले अर्को घरगृहस्थी बसाल्ने सल्लाह तथा प्रेरणा दिएपछि उहाँ घर फर्किनुभयो । पत्नीवियोगको करीब एघार वर्षपछि वि.सं. १९७२ सालमा कास्की जिल्लाको तारकाइ गाउंकी, सापकोटा थर भएका ब्राह्मण परिवारकी कन्या सत्यवतीसंग ३१ वर्षको उमेरमा उहाले दोस्रो विवाह गर्नुभयो । 

 

तत्कालीन प्रधानमन्त्री मातृकाप्रसाद कोइरालासहित सबै मन्त्री कर्मचारी र साहित्यकार तथा समाजसेवीहरूले कविशिरोमणि चढेको रथ तानेका थिए। रथयात्रा सहितको यो अभिनन्दन नेपाली साहित्यका साधकलाई गरिएको पहिलो यस्तो सम्मान भयो जसलाई न भूतो न भविष्यति भन्न सकिन्छ । कविशिरोमणिलाई २०१४ सालमा नेपाल प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठान, तत्कालीन रोयल नेपाल एकेडेमीको सदस्यमा मनोनयन गरियो भने २०१९ सालमा उहाँको चित्राङ्गित हुलाक टिकट पनि प्रकाशित गरिएको थियो। मरणोपरान्त २०२६ सालमा त्रिभुवन प्रज्ञा पुरस्कारवाट उहाँ सम्मानित हुनुभएको छ । 

 

२०२२ सालमा बनारस जांदा विरामी परेपछि मर्ने वेला विदेश जान्न, म आफ्नै देशमा मर्छु नेपालकै माटोमा मर्छु’ भनी फर्किएर देवघाट आई बसेको सन्दर्भ स्मरणीय छ । त्यही वर्ष २०२२ साल फागुन ७ गतेका दिन देवघाटको नारायणी-गण्डकीको पावन सङ्गममा उहाँले देह विसर्जित गर्नुभयो। अन्त्यकालमा उहाँले गुनगुनाइरहनुहुने यस पद्यले उहाँको जीवनदर्शन प्रतिविम्वित गरेको पाइन्छ।

 

यो दुःख भोग्ने परमेश्वरै हो यो देह उस्को रहने घरै हो 

यो भत्किंदा दुःख अवश्य मान्छ सुटुक्क सामान लिएर जान्छ ।

 

पाञ्चभौतिक शरीर यस जगतमा नरहे पनि आफ्ना अमर कृतिहरूमार्फत् उहाँको रचनाहरु आज हामीमाझ अमर बनेर रहेको छ । 

 

कविशिरोमणिका भनाइहरु:

 

कविशिरोमणि साहित्यका परिष्कारवादी अथक साधक हुन उहाँले आफूलाई आजीवन नेपाली साहित्यको सेवामा श्रद्धाभावले गर्नुभयो। जीवनको उत्तरार्धतिर आफ्नो कृति, कवित्व र साहित्यकारिताका बारे उहाँ भन्नुहुन्छ:

 

मैले मेरो कुनै कृतिलाई सर्वश्रेष्ठ सम्झेको छैन । जुनसुकै कृतिमा पनि केही न केही कमीको अनुभव गरिरहन्छु। शायद यस जीवनमा त्यस्तो कृति निकाल्नै शक्ने छैन जसमा कि मेरा अन्तरात्माले सर्वश्रेष्ठताको भल्का देख्न सकोस … केही न केही मातृभाषाको सेवा गर्ने दीर्घरोगले अझसम्म त छोडेको छैन अब के होला ? त्यै भगवान् जानोस जसले मलाई लोकसेवामा खटायेर तपाईंहरूको अगाडि पठायो ।

 

केही समय श्री ३ भीम शमशेरका पुजारीसमेत रहेका लेखनाथलाई तत्कालीन यथार्थको राम्रो राणाकालको वर्वर र क्रूर परिवेशमा लेखकका सामु अनगिन्ती बनी फुटकर कवितासम्म पनि राणा शासकको अनुमतिविना छाप्न परिस्थिति थिएन। सावधानी अपनाउन नसक्दा सर्वस्य हुनसक्ने खतरा थियो । परिस्थितिमा पनि राणा शासनलाई चुनौती दिँदै, सामन्ती संस्कारप्रति व्य गर्दै लेखनाथले सिर्जना गरेका कविताका पक्तिहरू अद्यापि जनजिब्रोमा भिजिरहेका छन्।

 

म खाऊँ मै लाऊँ, सुख, सयल वा मोज म गरूँ

म बाचूँ, मै नाचूँ, अरु सब मरून् दुर्बलहरू ।

भनी दाह्रा धस्ने अबुझ शठदेखी छक्क परी

चिता खित्का छोडी अभयसित हाँस्यो मरिमरी ।।
