We warmly welcome you to Shree Chunidevi Temple, located in Ward No. 22 of Lalitpur Metropolitan City of Lalitpur District, within Bagmati Province.
History of the Chunidevi temple:
Chunidevi is also worshiped as Chandika Devi. Devotees of this community believe that due to the divine power of the temple, animals like cows, buffaloes and goats will be cured and impacts their overall well-being. There is a popular belief that even today devotees from different districts such as Kavre, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Dhading, Makwanpur, Nuwakot, Sindhupalchok visit the Chunidevi temple for themselves as well as for their sick or barren animals.
Chunidevi is also known for a unique miracle, in which devotees offer flour to the lion idol located outside the Chunidevi temple. The fallen remains are given as medicine to the animals during the meal offering. Surprisingly, it seems that after this action, the animal breeders believe that the health condition of the animals will improve. Locals said that they believe that the animals will not only recover from the disease, but also regain their fertility.
These devotees offer animal milk, curd or even eggs in remembrance of Chunidevi Mata after their animals are recovered.
Although there is no exact date of the establishment of the Chunidevi temple, there is an inscription on the left and right side of Mahadev which mentions that the temple was established on the day of Nepal Sambat 822 (1758 B.S.) on Marg Shukla Trayodashi. Even older Nepal Sambat, i.e. Nepal Sambat 789 (B.S. 1725) Chaitra month Shukla Paksha Chaturadashi later Purnima Tithi, confirms that this temple is at least 355 years old.
As per the description of Goddess Chunidevi in the Nepal Khanda Mahatmya, Chunidevi is mentioned in serial number 16 page no. 120 of Shaktipeeth in Lalitpur district of Bagmati region in the introduction appendix of religious places of Nepal.
While entering the Chunidevi temple complex, it is customary to enter from the right side and the puja of this temple starts from the temple of Shivaji. You will see stairs leading to the main gate on your left side. Opposite to the stairs, you will find Shivaji temple. Similarly, worship of deities such as the Sapta Rishi is also performed along with the worship of Goddess Chunidevi.
Starting from the northern gate of Shivaji’s temple, you proceed to the eastern, then the southern, and finally the western gate. However, without completing the entire circumambulation, you will return to the starting point (near Chunidevi Gate stairs) through the western gate. Near the stairs to Chunidevi Gate, you will see another set of stairs leading straight to the open space.
Descending the stairs and taking a right turn you will get a clear view of the ‘Sapta Rishi’ temple. To the left of Sapta Rishi Temple, you can see another staircase leading to the western gate of Shivaji Temple.
Opposite the western gate and just behind the ‘Sapta Rishi’ temple, you will find the idols of: Saraswati, Radha Krishna and Sita Rama. From here you can reach the starting point if you take a left turn i.e. at the main stairs of the main gate of Chunidevi temple, where you will also see two big bells.
After climbing the stairs, the Hanuman temple is visible. This sacred structure is surrounded by magnolia champak (bow) tree on one side and Tulsi plant (symbol of purity and devotion) on the other side. Besides this, there is also a stone inscription next to the idol of Shree Hanuman.
Similarly, if you go back a few steps behind the temple of Hanuman, you can see the main temple of Chunidevi on the right side. As you approach the main gate of the temple, you will see a place where lamps are lit on the right side of the temple along with a big bell. On the right side of this area, you see Vashuki Nag turning towards the main temple, dedicated to the Nag deity.
Proceeding in the left direction, you see the sleeping idol of Lord Vishnu. Parallel to Lord Vishnu’s idol, a small idol of Dakshinkali Mata can also be seen. To the west of Lord Vishnu’s statue, there is also a statue of Bindhyabasini goddess.
After completing the visit to the temple, one can see the bhajan room in front of the gate of Chunidevi temple. Upon entering, you will immediately notice Chunidevi’s crown, which is displayed inside a transparent glass case near the door.
Similarly, on the right side of the statue, there is also a donation box for those who wish to contribute towards the upkeep of the temple. The walls of this holy place are filled with orange color and beautiful Sanskrit verses are painted on the same wall in dark blue color.
The local community organizes an annual program to worship Chunidevi and they all gather together to perform various hymns.
Main Temple of Chunidevi:
When you first see the Chunidevi temple, you can circle the temple once from the left before entering. The entrance to the main temple is facing towards the south, and outside the temple gate there are 322 and 355 year old inscriptions as well as lions as basahs on the right and left sides. Similarly, there are two bells on the right and left outside the door of the temple.
After entering the temple, to the left; you can see the first idol of Ganesh, followed by the second idol of Bhimsen. Moving forward, the fourth idol is of the Kul Devata (the deity of the clan), while the ninth idol shows Nateshwor.
Similarly, from the right side; Bajrabarahi can be seen in the first, Dakshinakali in the second and Chinnamasta in the fourth. Then – you can see the main idol of Chunidevi herself in the middle. In which you can see the goddess resting her right leg gracefully on top of the lion.
Repairs in Chunidevi Temple:
According to the currently received evidence and inscriptions, the first reparation of Bhagwati Chunidevi Mata was done on Nepal Sambat 789 (B.S. 1725) on Purnima Tithi on Chaitra Shulka–Paksha and the present form was walled.
On Nepal Sambat 822 (1758 B.S.), Bhauma Mahadev was seated on the left and right of the temple to keep Bhagawati in a stable state.
On 27th Chaitra, 2070 B.S., the work of covering the roof of this temple was completed. In the northeast part of this temple, one can see an inscription placed on a brass plate.
Shrines of Chunidevi Temple
1. Bhairav Temple
According to local beliefs, goats and other animal sacrifices are brought to this temple on various important festivals like Chhyama Puja and Kul Puja and on birthdays or any other occasion of happiness and prosperity.
2. Vashuki Nag Temple
According to local belief, devotees who have faith in this deity, it is also said that when all efforts to perform snake worship elsewhere fails, people are cured by worshiping Vashuki snake here as a last resort.
Festivals and Celebrations in Chunidevi Temple:
Locals here celebrate various festivals like Krishna Janmashtami and Shivratri. Additionally, they perform Puja and aarti at Shivaji’s temple every Monday. Bhagwati Chandika Chunidevi is specially worshiped on the first day of Baisakh. Similarly, Kul Puja is performed on the auspicious day of Jestha Purnima, while on Vijayadashami’s night Kot Puja is performed to Jamara kept on the day of Ghatasthapana by coming to the Kot house of the temple.
Also, on the eve of Mangsir Purnima, lamps are lit on every local house throughout the night, while the entire community and devotees gather for bhajans and various other dances. Special Puja is also performed during Navratri of Chaitra. On every full moon day, an evening prayer is held in this temple complex.
Many devout followers of Chunidevi Mata from the valley and beyond visit this temple on their birthdays. There is also a tradition of lighting a candle or incense in a lamp, praying for a long and prosperous life. Apart from this, every Saturday and Tuesday morning, people perform Bhajan and Aarti at the temple.
Various religious and cultural rituals, such as weddings, bratabandha ceremonies, and lakhbatti puja (Lighting one lakh oil lamps/lights), are conducted at this temple. If a community living near the Chunidevi temple has a wedding, it is customary for the groom and the bride to circumambulate the temple. The belief is that seeking the blessings of Chunidevi Mata ensures a successful and happy married life.
1. Chhyama Puja (Worship for forgiveness)
Once a year, especially in the month of July, there is a popular belief that locals hear the roar of a tiger at night while walking through this temple. Locally, this incident is understood as a sign of dissatisfaction of goddess Chunidevi. All the villagers unite and perform the holy ‘Chhyama Puja’. They offer animal sacrifices to Goddess Chunidevi asking for forgiveness.
The only reason for performing this Puja (worship) is to seek forgiveness from Chunidevi Mata.

चुनिदेवी मन्दिर
ॐ चुनीदेव्यै नम: चुनिदेवी मन्दिरमा हजुरहरुलाई हार्दिक स्वागत छ।
देवि प्रपन्नार्तिहरे प्रसीद
प्रसीद मतर्जगतो Sखिलस्य ।
प्रसीद विश्वेश्वरिं पाहि विश्वं
त्वमीश्वरी देवि चराचारस्य ।।
बाग्मती प्रदेशको ललितपुर जिल्ला, ललितपुर महानगरपालिका, वडा नं. २२ मा आवस्थित चुनिखेलको श्री चुनिदेवी मन्दिरमा हजुरहरुलाई हार्दिक स्वागत छ।
मन्दिरको इतिहास
चुनिदेवीलाई चण्डिका देवीका रूपमा पनि पुजिन्छ । मन्दिरको दिव्य शक्तिको प्रभावले गाई, भैंसी, बाख्रा जस्ता जनावरहरूको रोग निको हुने र कल्याण हुने श्रद्धालुहरुको जनविश्वास छ। चुनिदेवी मन्दिरमा आज पनि काभ्रे, काठमाडौं, ललितपुर, भक्तपुर, मकवानपुर, नुवाकोट, सिन्धुपाल्चोक, धादिङ, लगायतका विभिन्न जिल्लाहरुबाट भक्तजनहरुले आफ्ना लागि साथै जनावरहरुका लागि मन्दिर आउँछन् भन्ने जनविश्वास रहेको छ।
चुनिदेवी एक अद्वितीय चमत्कारको लागि पनि चिनिन्छिन्, जसमा भक्तजनहरूले चुनिदेवी मन्दिरको बाहिर अवस्थित सिंहको मूर्तिलाई पीठो चढाउँछन्। झरेका अवशेषहरू पिठो चढाउने क्रममा जनावरहरूलाई औषधिको रूपमा दिइन्छ। अचम्मको कुरा, यस कार्यपछि पशुपालकहरुले जनावरको स्वास्थ्य स्थितिमा सुधार आउने विश्वास रहेको देखिन्छ। स्थानीयहरुले भने, जनावरहरु रोगबाट निको मात्र नभई, तिनीहरुको प्रजनन क्षमता पनि पुन: प्राप्त हुने विश्वास गर्दछन्। यी भक्तजनहरूले आफ्नो पशुको राम्रो भएपछि, चुनिदेवी मातालाई सम्झी पशुको दूध, दही वा हाँसको अण्डा पनि चढाउने गर्दछन्।
चुनिदेवी मन्दिर स्थापनाको निश्चित मिती नभएतापनि नेपाल सम्बत् ८२२ (बि.स १७५८) मार्ग शुक्ल त्रयोदशिको दिनमा महादेवको दायाँ-बायाँ साना देवल बनाइएको शिलापत्र रहेको छ। यसभन्दा पनि पुरानो नेपाल सम्बत ७८९ (बि.स. १७२५) चैत्र महिना शुक्लपक्ष चतुरदर्शी उप्रान्त पूर्णिमा तिथिको जिर्णोद्वारले यो मन्दिर कम्तिमा ३५५ वर्ष पुरानो भएको पुष्टि हुन्छ।
चुनिदेवी माताको वर्णन नेपाल खण्ड महात्म्यमा उल्लेख भए अनुसार नेपालको धार्मिक स्थल परिचय परिसिष्टमा बाग्मती अञ्चलको ललितपूर जिल्लाको शक्तिपिठको क्रम सङ्ख्या १६ पेज नं १२० मा उल्लेख छ।
चुनिदेवी मन्दिर परिसरमा प्रवेश गर्दा अन्य हिन्दु देवीदेवताको जस्तै दाहिने तर्फबाट प्रवेश गर्ने चलन छ र यस मन्दिरको पुजा भने शिवजीको मन्दिरबाट सुरु गरिन्छ। तपाईंले आफ्नो बायाँ छेउमा मुख्य गेटमा जाने सिढीहरू देख्नुहुनेछ। सिढीको विपरीत, तपाईंले शिवजीको मन्दिर पाउनुहुनेछ। त्यस्तै गरी, सप्तऋषि लगायत यी सबै देवताहरुको पूजा पनि चुनिदेवी पूजा सँगसँगै गरिन्छ।
शिवजीको मन्दिरको उत्तरी ढोकाबाट सुरु गरेर, तपाईं पूर्व, त्यसपछि दक्षिणी, र अन्त्यमा पश्चिमी ढोकातिर जानुहुन्छ। यद्यपि, पुरा परिक्रमा पूरा नगरी, तपाईं पश्चिमी ढोकाबाट फर्केर सुरुवातको ठाउँमा (चुनिदेवी गेट सीढीहरू नजिक) पुग्नुहुनेछ। चुनिदेवी गेटको सिँढीहरू नजिकै, तपाईंले सिधा खुला ठाउँतिर सिँढीहरूको अर्को सेट देख्नुहुनेछ।
सिँढी झरेर दायाँ मोड लिँदा तपाईंले ‘सप्त ऋषि’ मन्दिर देख्न सक्नु हुनेछ। सप्त ऋषि मन्दिरको देब्रेपट्टि, तपाईंले शिवाजी मन्दिरको पश्चिमी ढोकातिर जाने अर्को सिढी देख्न सक्नुहुन्छ।
पश्चिमी ढोकाको विपरित र ‘सप्त ऋषि’ मन्दिरको ठिक पछाडि, निम्न देवी देवताहरुको मूर्तिहरू पाउनुहुनेछ जस्तै: सरस्वती, राधा कृष्ण र सीता राम । यहाँबाट बायाँ मोड लिनुभएमा सुरुको बिन्दुमा पुग्न सकिन्छ। चुनिदेवी मन्दिरको मुख्य गेटको मुख्य सीढीहरूमा, जहाँ दुईवटा ठूला घण्टीहरू पनि देख्न सकिन्छ।
सिँढी चढेपछि हनुमान मन्दिर देखिन्छ। यो पवित्र संरचना एकातिर म्याग्नोलिया चम्पाक (चाप)को रुख र अर्कोतिर तुलसीको बोटले (शुद्धता र भक्तिको प्रतिकले) घेरिएको छ । यसबाहेक, श्री हनुमानको मूर्तिको छेउमा, एक ढुङ्गाको धर्म स्तम्भ पनि छ।
त्यसैगरी हनुमानको मन्दिर पछाडि फर्केर केही पाइला अगाडि बढ्दा दाहिनेतर्फ चुनिदेवीको मुख्य मन्दिर रहेको छ । जब मन्दिरको मुख्य द्वारमा पुगिन्छ, मन्दिरको दायाँतिर बत्ती बाल्ने दियोहरु राखिएको छ साथै मन्दिरको पूर्वपट्टि ठूलो घण्टी देख्न सकिन्छ। यस क्षेत्रको दायाँ छेउमा, वाशुकी नाग देवताको समर्पित मुख्य मन्दिरतर्फ फर्किएको छ।
बायाँ तर्फ दिशामा अगाडी बढ्दै, भगवान विष्णुको सुतिरहेको मूर्ति रहेको छ। भगवान विष्णुको समानान्तर, दक्षिणकाली माताको मुर्ति पनि देख्न सकिन्छ। भगवान विष्णुको मुर्तिको पश्चिमतर्फ बिन्ध्यबासिनी माताको मुर्ति पनि रहेको छ।
मन्दिरको भ्रमण पूरा गरेपछि चुनिदेवी मन्दिरको द्वार अगाडी भजन कोठा देख्न सकिन्छ। प्रवेश गरेपछि, तुरुन्तै चुनिदेवीको मुकुट देख्न सकिन्छ जुन, ढोकाको छेउमा पारदर्शी सिसाको बाकश भित्र प्रदर्शित छ। त्यसैगरी, मूर्तिको दाहिने छेउमा, मन्दिरको मर्मत सम्भारमा योगदान गर्न चाहनेहरूका लागि एउटा दान पेटी पनि रहेको छ। यस पवित्र स्थानको भित्ताहरू सुन्तला रंगले भरिएका छन् भने त्यसै भित्तामा गाढा निलो रंगमा सुन्दर संस्कृतका श्लोकहरु चित्रित छन्। स्थानीय समुदायले चुनिदेवीको पूजा गर्न वार्षिक कार्यक्रमको आयोजना गर्ने र सबै एकसाथ भेला भएर विभिन्न भजनकृतन गर्ने गर्दछन्।
मुख्य मन्दिर
जब तपाईं पहिलो पटक चुनीदेवी मन्दिर देख्नुहुन्छ, तपाइँले भित्र छिर्नु आघि एकपटक बायाँतिरबाट मन्दिरको परिक्रम गर्न सक्नुहुनेछ। मुख्य मन्दिरको प्रवेशद्वार दक्षिण तर्फ फर्किएको छ, मन्दिरको द्वार बाहिर ३२२ र ३५५ वर्ष पुरानो शिलालेख साथै सिंह पनि बसाहको रुपमा दायाँ र बायाँ पट्टि अवस्थित छन्। त्यसै गरि मन्दिरको द्वार बाहिर दायाँ बायाँ दुइ घन्टी पनि छन्। मन्दिरको प्रवेश गरेपछि, बायाँ तिर; तपाईंले गणेशको पहिलो मूर्ति देख्न सक्नुहुन्छ, त्यसपछि दोस्रोमा भीमसेनको मूर्ति छ। अगाडि बढ्दै गर्दा चौथो मूर्ति कुल देवताको छ भने नवौं मूर्तिमा नाटेश्वर देखाइएको छ । त्यसै गरी, दायाँ तिरबाट; पहिलोमा बज्रबाराही, दोस्रोमा दक्षिणकाली र चौथोमा छिन्नमस्ता देख्न सकिन्छ। त्यसपछि – तपाईंले बिचमा चुनिदेवी स्वयंको मुख्य मूर्ति देख्न सक्नुहुन्छ। जसमा देवीले सिंहको माथि आफ्नो दाहिने खुट्टा सुन्दरतापूर्वक आराम गरिरहनु भएको देख्न सक्नुहुन्छ।
जिर्णोद्वार
हाल प्राप्त प्रमाण र शिलालेख अनुसार भगवती चुनिदेवी माताको पहिलो जिर्णोद्वार नेपाल सं ७८९ (बि.स. १७२५) चैत्र महिना शुल्कपक्ष उपरान्त पुर्णिमा तिथिमा दायाँ बायाँ मुर्ति र हालको स्वरुप पर्खाल लगाइयो।
नेपाल सम्बत् ८२२ बि.स. १७५८ भगवति स्थिर अवस्थामा राख्न मन्दिरको बायाँ दायाँ भौँम महादेव विराजमान गरियो।
२०७० चैत्र २७ गते भगवतीको छाना, गजुर हाल्ने काम सम्पन्न भयो। सो मन्दिरको उत्तर पूर्व कुनामा पितलको पातामा शिला राखिएको छ।
चुनिदेवी मन्दिरमा अवस्थित देवी देवताहरु
- भैरव मन्दिर
स्थानीय मान्यताका अनुसार यस मन्दिरमा छ्यामा पूजा र कुल पूजा जस्ता विभिन्न महत्वपुर्ण चाडपर्व तथा जन्मदिन वा अन्य कुनै सुख–समृद्धिका अवसरमा बोका लगायतका पशुबलि ल्याइने गरिन्छ।
- वाशुकी नाग मन्दिर
स्थानीय मान्यता अनुसार यस देवतामा आस्था राख्ने भक्तजनहरूले आफ्नो कल्याणका लागि, यो पनि भनिन्छ कि जब अन्यत्र नाग पूजा गर्ने सबै प्रयासहरू असफल हुन्छन्, तब मानिसहरू अन्तिम उपायको रूपमा यहाँ वासुकी नाग पूजा गरेपछि निको हुन्छ भन्ने जनबिश्वास रहिआएको छ र सोहि अनुसार पूजा गर्ने गरेको पाइन्छ।
पूजा पर्वहरु
श्रद्दालु भक्तजनहरुले कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी, शिवरात्री जस्ता विभिन्न चाडपर्व मनाउनुका साथै प्रत्येक सोमबार शिवजीको मन्दिरमा पूजा र आरती गर्छन्। वैशाखको पहिलो दिन भगवती चण्डिका चुनिदेवीको विशेष पूजा गरिन्छ । त्यस्तैगरि, जेठ पूर्णिमाको शुभदिनमा कुल पूजा गरिन्छ भने विजयादशमीको रात मन्दिरको कोतघरमा आएर घटस्थापनाको दिन राखेको जमरालाई कोतपूजा गरिन्छ। साथै, मंसिर पूर्णिमाको अघिल्लो दिन स्थानीय साथै आसपासका बस्तीहरुबाट ल्याइएका दियोमा रातभरी दीप प्रज्वलन गरिन्छ, त्यसैगरि सम्पूर्ण समिति र भक्तजनहरू भजन, किर्तन र अन्य विभिन्न नृत्यहरूको लागि भेला हुन्छन्। चैत्रको नवरात्रमा विशेष पूजा गरिँदै आएको छ। प्रत्येक महिनाको पूर्णिमामा साँझ आरती गरिँदै आएको छ।
उपत्यका र उपत्यका बाहिरका चुनिदेवी माताका धेरै श्रद्धालु अनुयायीहरू आफ्नो जन्मदिनमा यस मन्दिरको दर्शन गर्छन्। लामो र समृद्ध जीवनका लागि प्रार्थना गर्दै, दियोमा बत्ति वा धुप बाल्ने परम्परा पनि यहाँ रहेको छ। यसका अतिरिक्त हरेक शनिबार र मंगलबार बिहान भजन र आरती हुने गर्दछ।
विवाह गर्ने, व्रतबन्ध गर्ने, लाख बत्ती बाल्ने जस्तै विभिन्न धार्मिक तथा सांस्कृतिक संस्कारहरु यस मन्दिरमा हुँदै आएको छ। चुनिदेवी मम्दिर वरपर बस्ने समुदायहरुको विवाह भयो भने दुलाहा दुलहीलाई मन्दिर परिक्रमा गराउने चलन छ। चुनिदेवी माताको दर्शनले वैवाहिक जीवन सफल र दाम्पत्य जीवन सुखमय हुने जनविश्वास रहेको छ।
क्षमा पूजा
वर्षको एक पटक विशेष गरी साउन महिनामा मन्दिरमा, स्थानीयहरु हिँड्ने क्रममा राती बाघको गर्जन सुन्ने जनविश्वास रहेको छ। स्थानीय रुपमा यस घटनालाई चुनिदेवीबाट असन्तुष्टिको संकेतको रूपमा बुझिन्छ। सम्पूर्ण गाउँलेहरू एकजुट भएर पवित्र ‘क्षमा पूजा’ गर्छन् । तिनीहरूले पशुबलि चढाएर चुनीदेवी मातासँग क्षमा माग्दै बलिको भोग देवीलाई अर्पण गर्छन्।
यो पूजा गर्नुको एकमात्र कारण चुनिदेवी मातासँग क्षमा माग्नु हो।
