Sainwar Chowk and its surrounding Rautenia area form an unparalleled confluence of natural beauty, eco-tourism, and cultural heritage, and are a site full of historical significance. This area lies close to a dense forest conservation zone and a mountain pass. To its north is the park, and to its east flows the Babai River, both of which have kept the area’s sanctity and historical character alive since ancient times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From Sainwar Chowk, the main road leads toward the temple and barrack area. An attractive paved entrance gate (welcome gate) has been built here. For the development of this area, a blacktopped road and modern solar lights for nighttime illumination have been installed. This combination of traditional houses along the roadside and modern infrastructure beautifully showcases the rural way of life and character of this place. Since the area borders the forest, both traditional wooden watchtowers and modern concrete watchtowers (view towers) have been built to monitor wildlife movement and biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main feature of this place is the Rautenia Jal Devi Temple. According to the folk history and beliefs of the local Tharu community, the founding of this temple is connected to a deeply moving and profound story of religious faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The story of the irrigation canal is a very old one. The village faced a severe shortage of water for farming. So, the entire village united to dig a western canal from the Babai River, creating a source to bring water to the village. Despite working day and night, every time they tried to build a dam on the Babai River, it broke. Despite many attempts to overcome the obstacles and bring water to the village canal, the local residents could not succeed. As all their efforts failed one after another, the villagers began to despair. It was then, in the course of digging the canal and building the dam, that a Tharu Katharia Guru (a tantric priest) made a harsh decision. For the welfare of the village and to quench its thirst for water, he had his own unmarried daughter lie at the foundation of the dam, and everyone then piled earth over her body to build a strong dam \u2014 after which the dam no longer broke. Because of this self-sacrifice by the unmarried girl, she was believed to have manifested as the “Jal Devi” (Water Goddess), and a shrine (a sacred site) was established there in her honor, founding the “Rautinya Temple.” To this day, that same unmarried girl is worshipped as the Rautinya Devi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But at one point, water stopped flowing into the village canal. While the Tharu gurus performed rituals to address this, the Rautinya Devi made her demand known: “Only if you offer me a buffalo, a goat, and a native rooster will I let water flow in the canal \u2014 otherwise, I will break the dam and let the flow of water reach even the top of the silk-cotton tree.” With this warning, the goddess laid down her condition, and in keeping with her words, the villagers began performing rituals and offerings according to proper procedure. From that day on, a strict rule was established: during the farming season, all villagers were forbidden from taking water from the goddess’s canal in certain prohibited ways [customs such as “megha lotna” and “gai bandhne,” practices believed to invite even a curse from the sky, were banned]. There was great fear that if anyone did so, the Rautinya Devi would grow angry, break the dam, and flood the entire village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every year after the harvest, a “Hariri Puja” (a worship performed for good, green crops) is held at the temple, along with other special worship ceremonies from time to time. According to elders of the past, “During the worship, the temple’s priest would communicate with the goddess’s messengers or powers beneath the water to learn what items were needed for the ritual. In front of all the villagers, he would enter the very deep part of the river in front of the goddess’s temple and disappear underwater for half an hour to an hour. When he emerged from the water, he would recount his astonishing experience \u2014 that beneath the water lay an extremely bright world, adorned with ancient Tharu cultural artifacts, an exceedingly beautiful place.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus, the unmarried girl who sacrificed her life to save the village’s canal and dam is today’s Rautinya Devi. Even today, everyone regards this supernatural power and glory of the Rautinya Devi with equal reverence and continues the traditional worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even today, this temple remains the foremost center of faith in the region. The original traditions handed down since ancient times continue to this day. Each year, before the start of the farming season, local residents offer pure cow’s milk at the water source, worshipped through the guru, before it is presented as an offering. Only after performing this religious ritual is the canal’s source traditionally opened for irrigation, in the belief that this ensures a good rice harvest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within a safe fenced enclosure, in an open and peaceful green meadow, stands the main “Shree Rautenia Jal Devi Temple” with its white spire, along with other subsidiary shrines in its complex (dedicated to Santoshi Mata, Shiva, and Radha-Krishna). According to local elders, because of this temple’s religious power and peaceful atmosphere, wild elephants are said to visit every year, bowing to the temple or circling it before departing, according to eyewitnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With its dense forest, historic mountain pass, barrack gate, natural river, and the historical originality and faith embodied by the Rautenia Jal Devi Temple of the Tharu community, this area has become an outstanding religious and tourist destination. If this sacred land can be preserved and promoted at the national level, it is certain to make a great contribution to cultural
