Located on the East-West Highway at the boundary between Thakurbaba Municipality and Barbardiya Municipality in Bardiya, the Babai Bridge is one of Nepal’s strategic and scenic tourism landmarks. Built over the Babai River, this bridge serves as the backbone connecting the Far-Western and Lumbini provinces. Its particular significance lies in the fact that on one side of the bridge are human settlements in the buffer zone of the park, while on the other side begins the dense, protected forest of Bardiya National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This 315-meter-long bridge was built during King Birendra’s reign, in the 1980s (2040s B.S.), with Japanese or other foreign assistance, as part of the construction of the Kohalpur\u2013Banbasa section of the East-West Highway (Mahendra Highway). While many other bridges in Nepal have been damaged by floods and technical failures, the Babai Bridge has remained safely in continuous operation for the past four decades, thanks to its strong engineering and quality construction. It has carried millions of travelers and vehicles safely to their destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than just a means of transportation, this bridge has today become like an open “view tower.” Standing on the bridge and looking down, one can see gharial and mugger crocodiles basking lazily on the riverbank, herds of beautiful deer coming to drink water, and the captivating view of the park’s vast green forest. Situated on this nationally significant highway, the bridge has become the first and foremost spot for every tourist visiting Bardiya to take in this incomparable gift of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mugger and gharial crocodiles basking in the sun can easily be seen on the riverbank right beneath this bridge. Lucky tourists may also spot Bengal tigers, leopards, one-horned rhinoceroses, blackbuck, hog deer, wild boar, jackals, river otters, wild elephants, or various species of deer that come to the riverbank to drink, all from around this very bridge.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Being a riverside area, this place sees frequent activity from many native and winter-migratory birds, such as kingfishers, egrets, hornbills, herons, and peacocks.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Many types of plants are found in this area. Among them, the Tharu community uses agai, bayar, phutki, and bemti as food and medicine, and khar, kaans, and muj grass to make dhakiya (traditional baskets).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Since this bridge is on the Mahendra Highway and close to Bardiya National Park, it has become a major stopping point for tourists visiting Thakurdwara (Thakurbaba Temple). Especially in the afternoon and evening, it holds great tourism potential for domestic tourists who come here to take photographs, make TikTok videos, relax, and enjoy nature.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The riverbank near Babai Bridge is a very popular spot for picnics, especially from Mangsir to Magh-Falgun (the winter months and around the New Year), when many people come here to have picnics, enjoy themselves, and swim in the Babai River. Visitors come from within Bardiya District (Gulariya, Barbardiya, Madhuwan, Thakurbaba) as well as from the neighboring district of Banke (Nepalgunj, Kohalpur) and Surkhet, along with people from the Far-Western districts (Kailali, Kanchanpur), Butwal, Dang, and even as far as Kathmandu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is a small, round fruit with a sweet-and-sour taste that grows on a thorny shrub. When ripe, it turns yellow or light red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Tharu community has a distinctive and delicious traditional method of using this “bayar” fruit. They collect the ripe fruit and dry it well in the sun. It is then ground on a traditional grinding stone and mixed with salt, chili, mustard oil, and local spices to make a tasty chutney or pickle.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n In some places, the bayar fruit is pounded and mixed with a little jaggery or spices, formed into small discs or masyaura, and dried. This preparation can be stored for a long time and eaten later as an accompaniment to vegetables or snacks, and is also considered beneficial for digestion.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The khar, kaans, and muj grasses found along the riverside and floodplain areas of the Babai River form the main basis of Tharu handicrafts. Tharu women collect this natural muj and kaans grass from the riverbank and dry it. They then dye it in various bright, attractive colors to weave artistic dhakiya (baskets). In Tharu culture, the dhakiya is not just a household item for storing grain or belongings \u2014 it is also an important cultural symbol used to give as dowry at weddings, in worship, and as a gift when welcoming guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The riverbank at Babai Bridge is a very popular area for picnics, and the number of visitors who come here for picnics is quite large.
